America at War- An Overview
This website was created as a part of the America at War project at Da Vinci Charter Academy in Davis CA. The objective of this project was to study and understand the events and effects of the Korean War. We were also tasked with reading The Bridges at Toko-Ri by James A. Michener. The novel follows a Navy fighter pilot as he completes his mission of bombing the bridges at Toko-Ri. Through the novel, we see the war's effects and tragedies.
The Korean War was a war between the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (North Korea) and the Republic of Korea (South Korea). North Korea was backed by the USSR and later the Republic of China. The United Nations supported the South Korea's goal of a democratic government militarily and financially. Together, the Republic of Korea and the United Nations halted the North Korean invasion, stopped the spread of Communism through the Korean Peninsula, and reestablished a secure border along the 38th Parallel.
