Lyrics:
Thank you dear God for victory in Korea We're grateful that the battle's won We give you the praise for victory in Korea We thank you dear God for what you've done Oh the boys gave their lives, left their children and wives They were willing to die for you and me Night and day they did fight, for the cause that is right For America and its liberty Thank you dear God for victory in Korea We're grateful that the battle's won We give you the praise for victory in Korea We thank you dear God for what you've done For awhile it looked to me we would be pushed into the sea But the good Lord said, "I will not let you down" He gave us tanks, planes and guns, so America's fighting sons Have Old Glory waving in Korea now Thank you dear God for victory in Korea We're grateful that the battle's won We give you the praise for victory in Korea We thank you dear God for what you've done We must kneel and pray that peace will come and stay For this world, it is full of greed and hate The oppressor waiting there, we can stop him with a prayer So let's talk to God before it is too late Thank you dear God for victory in Korea We're grateful that the battle's won We give you the praise for victory in Korea We thank you dear God for what you've done |
Analysis:
This song gives the impression upon the reader that the Korean War is valiant effort to save America from all the, “greed and hate,” in the world. After listening to the song the listener may think that, “The oppressor [is] waiting there, we can stop him with a prayer,” and this proves that the United States is highly religious during this time and how they truly believe that God is protecting their soldiers in this war. This song is definitely pro-war for it states that the soldiers fought for a, “…cause that is right.” The constant referrals to God stand out because it reveals how the United States is very Christian and how they believe that God has the same ideals as them and that is why God will make sure that the Americans will win this war. The song also referred to the communist regime in North Korea as an oppressor against American liberty and freedom. This song is in support of the foreign policy used by the United States during the Korean conflict because the song says that, "...Old Glory [is] waving in Korea now," this supports the active troops inside of South Korea because without this active force of ground troops the American flag would have never flown over Korea. The song constantly says that God is on the American's side which makes it seem that the United States is protecting South Korea from an oppressing force because God is always protecting the people and destroying the evil in the world . This song explains how the war affected some parts of society because it explains how the American people believed that God was protecting their freedom and liberty from the communists who were the oppressors of these American ideals. American society believed that this war was worth the cost. |
