Written by Jimmie Osborne We read in the newspaper, hear on the radio They're fighting in Korea, the boys are called to go To meet the enemy as he comes across the line God please protect America in this troubled time Oh people let's start prayin', as we never prayed before We need the hand of God, to lead us through this war Give us vic'try in Korea, and save our boys so fine God please protect America in this troubled time How can we stand another war to take our loved ones dear? And leave our homes so lonesome with this dread and fear Our hearts will bleed both night and day for the men out on the line God please protect America in this troubled time Oh people let's start prayin', as we never prayed before We need the hand of God, to lead us through this war Give us vic'try in Korea, and save our boys so fine God please protect America in this troubled time God tells us in the bible to pray both day and night We do not know the hour when the enemy will strike If you'll be faithful to till end no matter what the sign God will protect America in this troubled time Oh people let's start prayin', as we never prayed before We need the hand of God, to lead us through this war Give us vic'try in Korea, and save our boys so fine God please protect America in this troubled time |
God Please Protect America, written by Jimmie Osbourne, was first recorded on July 26th of 1950. This song is anti-war, as seen in the lyrics. How can we stand another war to take our loved ones dear? In this line, Jimmie Osbourne is referencing the previous war, World War 2, and its numerous casualties. He asks if America can survive another war. This demonstrates his distaste for the war. I think this song is doubtful of the United State’s policy of collective security. The lyrics ask if the United States will stand this war. We need the hand of God, to lead us through this war. The song has a very religious tone, as Jimmie is praying and pleading to God. I was surprised by the amount of religious influence in the song. I think this was a direct result of the direness of the situation in Korea. This song was recorded as the perimeter was moving deeper south. Because of this language, we can see how this song answers how war impacts society. If this song expresses the thoughts of the whole nation, then the country was on edge. No one was sure if there could be a positive outcome to the war. Instead, they focused on prayer. Oh people let's start prayin', as we never prayed before. Regardless of my own beliefs, I appreciate the singer’s effort and the motive behind his fervent prayer. I do think that, in reference to the timing, that this song does accurately portray the thoughts of society as a whole at the time.
