The Bridges at Toko-Ri
The Bridges at Toko-RI is a great American novel that follows naval fighter pilot, Harry Brubaker. The book is divided into three chapters- Sea, Land, and Sky.
In Sea, we are introduced to Harry. Harry fought in World War 2 and was gathering pay during the brief period of peace. Brubaker is bitter abut to the war due to the fact that he was called back. He still does the job and is one of the best fighter pilots in his division. He gains the attention of the imposing Admiral Tarrant, who has lost both of his sons to war. He soon takes an interest in Harry and views him as his replacement son, even finding traits in him that he saw in his sons. This is displayed after Harry crashes into the ocean and is saved by Mike Forney and Nestor Gamidge. The Admiral takes the opportunity to talk to Harry and they discuss the war. They also discuss the fact the Harry's wife and children will be in Japan while Harry is on shore leave. Despite the irregularity of this situation, the Admiral does nothing to stop Brubaker's little bit of happiness.
In Land, Harry and his fellow soldiers enjoy shore leave in Japan. While Harry hopes to spend all of his time with his family, his perfect leave is soon interrupted. He receives news that Mike Forney has gotten into a brawl with the man who is marrying his girl. Harry leaves his family to save the man who saved his life. This visibly irritates his wife who instead talks at the bar with Tarrant. He explains why her family has sacrificed so much in comparison to others. She is also made aware of her husbands next task, the bombing of the bridges at Toko-Ri.
In Sky, Brubaker prepares for his task of bombing the bridges. He has a few days of nerves and almost backs out. However, even when the Admiral offers him the chance to skip the mission, Brubaker sees the mission as his duty. After much preparation, Brubaker bombs the bridges at Toko-Ri. At the order of his commanding officer, he also attempts to take out an armory. He crash lands in Korea and is rescued by Mike Forney. However, the helicopter explodes, leaving Mike and Brubaker stranded. Together, they are killed while fighting Communist troops on the ground.
